Overview
Trezor Suite is the official companion application for Trezor hardware wallets, designed to help you manage, send, receive, and monitor digital assets while keeping private keys isolated on your device. This guide provides an official-style walkthrough for downloading, installing, and configuring Trezor Suite safely on desktop systems, plus recommended best practices.
Before you begin — checklist
- Have your Trezor device (Trezor One or Model T) and its USB cable ready.
- Use a personal, malware-free computer that you control.
- Write down recovery seed materials on paper; do not store seeds digitally.
- Ensure your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux) is up to date.
- Close unrelated applications and disable remote desktop tools temporarily.
Step 1 — Verify system requirements
Confirm that your computer meets the basic requirements. Most modern machines with current OS updates are compatible. You will need a free USB port and sufficient disk space for the application and occasional updates.
Step 2 — Downloading the installer
Download the Trezor Suite installer appropriate for your operating system. Choose the correct build (Windows, macOS, or Linux) and prefer the desktop application for maximum privacy. If you opt for the web interface, use a secure browser session and consider the desktop app when possible for improved offline protections.
Step 3 — Install the application
- Windows: Run the downloaded .exe file and follow on-screen prompts. Approve any legitimate system prompts to complete installation.
- macOS: Open the downloaded .dmg, drag the Trezor Suite icon to your Applications folder, then run the app from Applications.
- Linux: Follow the distribution-specific instructions for installing AppImage or package files. Ensure the AppImage is executable (chmod +x), then run it.
Step 4 — Connect your Trezor device
Plug your Trezor into a reliable USB port using the provided cable. When the application detects the device, confirm the device model and serial displayed in the app match the physical sticker on your device. The device will prompt you to interact with its screen to continue.
Step 5 — Initialize or recover your wallet
During first-time setup you will be asked to either create a new wallet or recover an existing one using your >12/24-word recovery seed. Follow device prompts to create a secure PIN and to generate or verify the recovery seed. Always use the device screen for seed verification — never trust a computer screen for showing full seeds.
Step 6 — Firmware & device integrity
When you connect a new or reset Trezor device, the Trezor Suite may prompt you to install or update firmware. Firmware updates are cryptographically signed — allow the update only when initiated through the official app and approved on the device itself. Do not install firmware from unknown sources.
Step 7 — Add accounts & manage assets
After setup, you can add cryptocurrency accounts inside Trezor Suite. The app enumerates supported coins and networks; choose the accounts you need and begin monitoring balances. For sending or signing transactions, use the device to confirm every action and verify addresses on the device display.
Troubleshooting — common issues
- Device not detected: Try a different USB cable or port, and ensure no USB hubs are blocking communication.
- Firmware update failed: Restart the app and device, retry the update, and follow on-screen recovery options if needed.
- Application crashes: Reinstall the latest desktop version and confirm your OS is updated. Save logs if requested by support.
Post-install security tips
- Store your recovery seed in a secure, offline physical location (steel backup plates are recommended for long-term durability).
- Use a strong PIN and consider a passphrase (additional hidden wallet) for enhanced security.
- Enable device firmware checks and avoid third-party modifications to device hardware.
- Regularly back up wallet metadata and export transaction histories only to secure local storage for personal records.
